Perri Gaffney in The Resurrection of Alice

The New Voices Reading Series takes place at 7:30 on the first Tuesday of each month from October 2013 through July 2014.

The Billie Holiday Theatre New Voices Reading Series looks to discover new playwrights in order to help get their work seen and produced. The reward for being selected is that one of the readings from each season will be selected for a full production at The Billie Holiday Theatre during the following season.

The series started in the fall of 2011.

Past participants that have received full productions include The Resurrection of Alice by Perri Gaffney (reading in 2011, production in 2012) and Finding Home by Keline Adams (reading in 2012, production in 2013).

Other readings in the series include: Retrospect for Life by Dominique Morisseau in 2011, Iced Out, Shackled and Chained by Keisha T. Spence and Mo Beasley in 2012, and The Grove by Mfoniso Udofia and Dirty Blood by Stacy Osei-Kuffor in 2013. Our last reading was Pass Perfect by Joyce Walker Joseph in March, 2014.

OUR NEXT READING

The Billie Holiday Theatre New Voices Reading Series
Presents:
Bronzeville
  Bronzeville Street Scene

Written by Tim Toyama & Aaron Woolfolk
Directed by Jackie Alexander

Bronzeville opens in the summer of 1942 with the implementation of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066 that saw the internment of over 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent until the end of the Second World War. The word "Bronzeville" refers to the Little Tokyo neighborhood of Los Angeles after African Americans migrating to California from the South settled into its empty homes and businesses and created one of the region's first black communities.

Bronzeville tells the fictional story of what happens when a black family, newly arrived from Mississippi, discovers a young Japanese American man hiding out in their new home. As the story unfolds and new bonds are formed against a backdrop of caution and fear, the characters make choices that will stay with each of them for the rest of their lives.
