The Renaissance of Keisha is about Keisha Stanley, a 16-year-old who cuts Black History classes and hangs out under a bodega sign with her friends; because she doesn't believe that Black History will further her goals in life, and that it is just boring. When her grandfather grounds her and forces her to write a Black History report, a minor accident brings her in contact with Orrin. Orrin describes himself as the "keeper of the souls of young people, who have died in the past." Orrin then conjures up young souls from the past, from slavery to the Civil Rights movement, with hopes of getting Keisha to understand why it is important for her and others her age to embrace their history and continue the legacy of telling others about it.
